GROUNDWATER GEOPATHS
2023 - 2025

THE PROGRAM

Kansas Groundwater Geopaths is three year initiative supported by NSF funding. The program seeks to recruit diverse students to the geosciences through groundwater quality monitoring in Kansas rural domestic water wells.

GROUNDWATER QUALITY

Our recent research in the Great Bend Prairie aquifer demonstrated that groundwater quality has decreased significantly over the past 40 years primarily as a result of nitrate accumulation from fertilizer use (Lane et al., 2020). One big unanswered question is – how many private well owners are drinking water with hazardous levels of nitrate in your community?
